Pocahontas County Secondary Roads Mechanic

Pocahontas County Secondary Roads is Hiring: Mechanic

Pay starting at $26.67/hr

The Role: What You’ll Be Doing

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Mechanic to be the backbone of our operation. You will provide expert mechanical support to minimize downtime for our entire fleet, ensuring road crews have the tools they need to operate safely and effectively.

Core Mechanical Responsibilities:

  • Diagnose & Repair: Perform skilled inspection, analysis, and repair of a diverse fleet, including motor graders, tandem and semi tractors, snow plows, loaders, and specialized road construction equipment.
  • Engine & System Overhaul: Conduct major repairs and overhauls on both gasoline and diesel-powered engines, hydraulic systems (jacks, pumps, hoses), and vehicle systems.
  • Fabrication & Welding: Utilize advanced welding and torch skills to modify equipment, fabricate custom parts, and perform structural repairs.
  • Troubleshooting: Use both technical expertise and hands-on testing (including test drives) to diagnose complex equipment malfunctions and determine repair scopes.
  • Documentation: Accurately write and complete detailed repair and service reports, project summaries, and use specialized departmental software for record-keeping.
  • Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and training to equipment operators and new mechanics on safe operation and basic maintenance.
  • Construction Assistance: Assist construction or road maintenance crews with field projects as directed and able based on workload.

Qualifications and Requirements

What You Bring:

  • Experience: Three (3) to five (5) years of verifiable experience in heavy equipment, road, drainage, or construction maintenance.
  • Technical Knowledge: Proficient knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel-powered engines, hydraulic systems, and heavy construction equipment.
  • Tool Proficiency: Expertise in safely operating mechanics’ tools, pneumatic tools, welders, torches, and a variety of shop equipment.
  • Physical Ability: Ability to safely perform heavy physical effort, including lifting and carrying job-related objects, tools, and equipment up to 75 pounds independently, and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Licensing: Must possess and maintain a valid Iowa Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL)

Key Expectations:

  • Safety First: Maintain a strong commitment to all safety procedures and an organized, safe work environment.
  • Availability: Must be able to report to work in adverse weather conditions (including snow and ice removal) and be available for call-in outside of normal working hours, as directed.
  • Communication: Ability to read technical information (manuals, schematics) and communicate effectively with all county personnel and citizens.
